How to Start a Botox Business

We live in a Botox culture. Many people are resisting the aging process, and they’re willing to fight to stay young. You may have heard about one 69-year-old guy in the Netherlands who recently sued to make his age 20 years younger. He lost, but he made the point – age is just a number.

This explains the rise of Botox-related franchises, like medical spas, dermatology practices, plastic surgeon practices and Botox clinics, over the years. Allergan, the company that makes Botox, is having quite the moment. Allergan’s sales for Botox (which includes treatments for migraines as well as youth treatments) were $1.64 billion in 2018, up 13.4 percent from the year before.

As the co-founder of Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center, a medical spa franchise, I feel like I have some experience in running a Botox-related business. If you’re thinking of opening any business that involves Botox, allow me to make some suggestions to you.

Hire the Right People & Train Them

This is a good place to start. You need a medical director and medical provider, such as a nurse practitioner with advanced training. It wouldn’t hurt if you’re a doctor and plan on overseeing whatever business you’re opening up. There are too many stories of untrained people who inject Botox into somebody, and that person has to be rushed to an emergency room.

Note that I said untrained. You can work in medicine and still get in trouble for working with Botox. For instance, a nurse was arrested in November of 2018 and taken from her workplace, a medical spa in Spring, Texas, in handcuffs because she had been allegedly offering patients unlicensed Botox injections. The medical director was also in hot water.

I’m not well-versed on this particular case, but prosecutors said that the nurse, while a licensed vocational nurse, wasn’t licensed to perform nonsurgical medical procedures. My point is that you need the right people, the right training, and you need to make sure all licenses and certifications are up to date.

You’ll Need the Right Suppliers

Botox can be expensive. It can run $600 per vial, and you often have to buy 100 vials at a time. That means you’re looking at $60,000 per order. This can change if you buy in bulk or are hooked up with a franchise, like Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center. The franchise can use its purchasing power to get you steep volume discounts where you may save anywhere from 30 to 60 percent. That’s something to think about if you’re starting a business that involves Botox – or you’re bringing Botox into your business. You can’t offer your patients a good deal unless you’re getting a good deal first.

Think Outside the Marketing Box

For years, women have been the driving force behind Botox, but men are also becoming regular customers. In fact, two men in Los Angeles became known as the “Botox bandits” after going to a clinic and getting Botox injections, then dashing out of the clinic. As a result, the clinic was out $4,000.

That unfortunate anecdote aside, you may want to open some sort of clinic that caters to men who are interested in receiving Botox. My point is that the interest in Botox is growing among all genders and ages. The average Botox user is 46, but Allergan is also marketing itself to Millennials (people in their 20s). You may want your business to specialize and only cater to men or women. Maybe you’d prefer a particular age range like Millennials, Generation X or Baby Boomers. If you do want to focus on everyone, as we do at Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center, your customer base is virtually any adult on the planet.

Don’t Completely Bet on Botox

I know, I’ve used a lot of ink saying how great Botox is, and it is pretty great. But your business model should be based on providing solutions that make customers and clients look and feel better, with or without Botox. In other words, I wouldn’t start a business franchise called, “The Botox Hut” or “Botox King.” There are other drugs that are being developed to compete with Botox. Maybe one day people won’t be injecting Botox into their skin or lips, but something else. You want to make sure your business is ready for anything.

If you don’t restrict your business, your options will be limitless.
