Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid your body naturally produces to break down and absorb dietary fat. Kybella is a synthetic form of it, injected directly into the fat beneath the chin across a marked grid.
On contact it disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the cell to lyse. The contents are then cleared by your lymphatic system over the following weeks, which is what the swelling actually is.
Destroyed fat cells cannot regenerate. Each session treats the fat it reaches, which is why two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart are usual rather than one.

Aftercare
Kybella swells more than most injectables. Knowing the shape of it in advance is most of what makes it manageable.
The injections burn and sting, more than most injectables. Numbing cream and sometimes local anaesthetic are used. It lasts 10 to 15 minutes and subsides shortly after.
Swelling beneath the chin begins quickly and is often substantial. Ice, sleep elevated, and expect it to look worse before better.
Swelling peaks then begins to drop. Soreness, firmness and numbness in the area are all normal and expected.
Most patients are comfortable in public again. Numbness can persist and resolves on its own.
The area begins to look smaller rather than swollen, and the next session is planned from here.
Leave at least six weeks. This is not a treatment to have the month before a wedding.

No. Kybella is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, where there is infection in the treatment area, or where submental fullness is caused by loose skin or an enlarged thyroid rather than fat. A consultation and medical history review come first for exactly this reason.
