Double chin reduction · Under the chin

    In short

A double chin is submental fat, sometimes with loose skin over it. Kybella is an injectable deoxycholic acid that destroys fat cells in that pocket permanently, over two to four sessions. CoolSculpting freezes the same fat with an applicator instead of needles. Morpheus8 treats the skin rather than the fat, so it is the answer when laxity rather than volume is what you are seeing.

    Fat, skin, or both

Almost every double chin consultation starts in the same place: the patient has decided it is fat, and about a third of the time it is mostly skin. Fat under the chin responds to Kybella and CoolSculpting, both of which destroy fat cells permanently. Loose skin does not, and freezing it will not tighten it. Morpheus8 treats that instead. Getting this the wrong way round is the most common reason someone is disappointed with a result they technically got.

Fat first, skin second. Removing volume from a chin that also has loose skin can make the laxity more obvious, so where both are present the sequence matters and your provider will plan it.

    Treatment areas

    Where we treat

    How it works

    How Kybella Works

Why the reduction is permanent, and why it takes more than one visit.

Deoxycholic acid is a molecule your body already produces to break down dietary fat. Kybella is a synthetic form of it, injected directly into the fat pocket beneath the chin.

It disrupts the membrane of the fat cells it contacts, destroying them. Those cells are cleared by the body over the following weeks and do not come back, which is what makes the reduction permanent.

Each session treats the fat it reaches, so two to four sessions a month apart are usual. Swelling after treatment is the fat cells breaking down and is expected rather than a complication.

    Which product

    Kybella vs CoolSculpting vs Morpheus8

    Three treatments, three different problems.

A BHRC provider comparing double chin treatment options
    Kybella

Starts working: Swelling 3 to 7 days. Lasts: Permanent. Injectable, so it reaches pockets an applicator cannot sit on. Best for small to moderate, well-defined submental fat. Expect real swelling: it is the fat breaking down and it is the trade for precision.

    CoolSculpting

Starts working: Mild soreness, days. Lasts: Permanent. No needles and less swelling, but the applicator has to fit the area, so it suits a broader, fuller pocket. $800 a cycle, one to two cycles typical.

    Morpheus8

Starts working: 2 to 4 days. Lasts: Up to 12 months. Treats skin laxity, not fat. If your jawline has softened rather than filled out, neither fat treatment will fix it and this will.

    Doing nothing yet

Starts working: n/a. Lasts: n/a. Submental fullness can be positional or postural. If an assessment says the fat pocket is minimal, the honest answer is that no treatment is worth it.

What Double Chin Treatment Can Do For You

    And what it cannot.

A BHRC provider performing a Kybella treatment
    Permanently reduce submental fat

Both Kybella and CoolSculpting destroy fat cells rather than shrinking them, so treated cells do not return.

    Sharpen the jawline

Reducing the pocket under the chin restores the angle between jaw and neck, which is what reads as definition.

    Avoid surgery

Neither treatment involves incisions, anaesthesia or a recovery week. Neither replaces surgery for significant laxity either.

Treat skin as well as fat

Morpheus8 is on the same menu, so a plan can address both rather than only the part one device happens to treat.

    Set expectations honestly

Fat treatments do not tighten skin, and skin treatments do not remove fat. Being told which you actually have is the most useful part of the consultation.

Work with a defined end point

Because the fat cells are destroyed rather than suppressed, the course finishes rather than continuing indefinitely.

    Weight stability matters

Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain, so a stable weight is what protects the result.

    Aftercare

Recovery, and what to expect after

Kybella swells noticeably. Plan around it rather than being surprised.

A BHRC provider applying a cold compress after a chin treatment
    The first 24 hours

Swelling under the chin begins quickly and can be substantial. Ice, sleep elevated, and expect it to look worse before better.

    Days 2 to 4

Swelling peaks. Some numbness, firmness or tenderness in the area is normal and is the fat breaking down.

    Days 5 to 7

Swelling drops noticeably. Most patients are comfortable in public again by the end of the first week.

    Weeks 2 to 4

Firmness and any lumpiness settle. The area begins to look smaller rather than swollen.

    Before an event

Leave at least four weeks. Kybella is not a treatment to have the week before a wedding.

    Between sessions

About a month, so the tissue settles enough to judge what is left to treat.

    Long term

Destroyed fat cells do not return. Maintaining a stable weight protects the result.

    Aftercare

What to use at home afterwards.

Your result lasts longer when what you use at home is doing the same work. This is the routine our providers start most patients on, dispensed through the practice. Not sure it is right for your skin? Take the skin quiz, or ask your provider to build one around the treatment you are having.

    Frequently asked

    Double chin treatment questions, answered

    What causes a double chin?

A double chin (submental fat) can be caused by genetics, weight gain, aging, or poor posture. Many people have a genetic predisposition to storing fat under the chin, which is why diet and exercise often don’t eliminate it. The good news is that CoolSculpting, Morpheus8, and Evoke can effectively target this stubborn fat regardless of its cause.

Which treatment is best for my double chin?

The best treatment depends on your specific concerns. CoolSculpting is ideal for fat reduction when skin elasticity is good. Morpheus8 combines fat reduction with skin tightening for those with mild laxity. Evoke is excellent for facial remodeling and skin tightening with no downtime. Many patients benefit from combining treatments. Your provider will recommend the best approach during your consultation.

How many sessions will I need?

CoolSculpting typically requires 1-2 sessions for the chin area. Morpheus8 usually involves 2-3 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Evoke typically requires 6 sessions over 3 weeks for optimal results. Your provider will create a personalized treatment plan based on your anatomy and goals.

    Is there any downtime?

All three treatments have minimal downtime. CoolSculpting may cause temporary redness, swelling, or numbness for a few days. Morpheus8 typically causes mild redness for 24-48 hours. Evoke has virtually no downtime—you can return to normal activities immediately. Most patients can resume their regular routines the same day or next day.

    Are the results permanent?

CoolSculpting results are permanent—the destroyed fat cells are gone forever. However, remaining fat cells can still enlarge with significant weight gain. Morpheus8 and Evoke results can last 1-3 years, with maintenance sessions recommended to preserve results. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle helps ensure long-lasting results from all treatments.

    Does the treatment hurt?

CoolSculpting involves initial cold sensation and pulling pressure, but discomfort is minimal. Morpheus8 uses topical numbing cream, so most patients feel only pressure and warmth. Evoke is the most comfortable—patients describe it as a warm massage. Our providers ensure your comfort throughout every treatment.

    When will I see results?

Results develop gradually as your body responds to treatment. CoolSculpting results typically appear over 1-3 months as fat cells are processed and eliminated. Morpheus8 shows initial tightening immediately, with continued improvement over 3-6 months. Evoke results are visible after your series of treatments, with continued improvement for several months.

Can I combine treatments for better results?

Many patients achieve optimal results by combining treatments. A common approach is CoolSculpting for fat reduction followed by Morpheus8 or Evoke for skin tightening. This addresses both excess fat and skin laxity for comprehensive jawline transformation. Your provider will recommend the best combination strategy during your consultation.
