A double chin is submental fat, sometimes with loose skin over it. Kybella is an injectable deoxycholic acid that destroys fat cells in that pocket permanently, over two to four sessions. CoolSculpting freezes the same fat with an applicator instead of needles. Morpheus8 treats the skin rather than the fat, so it is the answer when laxity rather than volume is what you are seeing.
Almost every double chin consultation starts in the same place: the patient has decided it is fat, and about a third of the time it is mostly skin. Fat under the chin responds to Kybella and CoolSculpting, both of which destroy fat cells permanently. Loose skin does not, and freezing it will not tighten it. Morpheus8 treats that instead. Getting this the wrong way round is the most common reason someone is disappointed with a result they technically got.

Fat first, skin second. Removing volume from a chin that also has loose skin can make the laxity more obvious, so where both are present the sequence matters and your provider will plan it.

Deoxycholic acid is a molecule your body already produces to break down dietary fat. Kybella is a synthetic form of it, injected directly into the fat pocket beneath the chin.
It disrupts the membrane of the fat cells it contacts, destroying them. Those cells are cleared by the body over the following weeks and do not come back, which is what makes the reduction permanent.
Each session treats the fat it reaches, so two to four sessions a month apart are usual. Swelling after treatment is the fat cells breaking down and is expected rather than a complication.
Which product
Three treatments, three different problems.
Starts working: Swelling 3 to 7 days. Lasts: Permanent. Injectable, so it reaches pockets an applicator cannot sit on. Best for small to moderate, well-defined submental fat. Expect real swelling: it is the fat breaking down and it is the trade for precision.
Starts working: Mild soreness, days. Lasts: Permanent. No needles and less swelling, but the applicator has to fit the area, so it suits a broader, fuller pocket. $800 a cycle, one to two cycles typical.
Starts working: 2 to 4 days. Lasts: Up to 12 months. Treats skin laxity, not fat. If your jawline has softened rather than filled out, neither fat treatment will fix it and this will.
Starts working: n/a. Lasts: n/a. Submental fullness can be positional or postural. If an assessment says the fat pocket is minimal, the honest answer is that no treatment is worth it.

And what it cannot.
Both Kybella and CoolSculpting destroy fat cells rather than shrinking them, so treated cells do not return.
Reducing the pocket under the chin restores the angle between jaw and neck, which is what reads as definition.
Neither treatment involves incisions, anaesthesia or a recovery week. Neither replaces surgery for significant laxity either.
Morpheus8 is on the same menu, so a plan can address both rather than only the part one device happens to treat.
Fat treatments do not tighten skin, and skin treatments do not remove fat. Being told which you actually have is the most useful part of the consultation.
Because the fat cells are destroyed rather than suppressed, the course finishes rather than continuing indefinitely.
Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain, so a stable weight is what protects the result.
Aftercare
Kybella swells noticeably. Plan around it rather than being surprised.
Swelling under the chin begins quickly and can be substantial. Ice, sleep elevated, and expect it to look worse before better.
Swelling peaks. Some numbness, firmness or tenderness in the area is normal and is the fat breaking down.
Swelling drops noticeably. Most patients are comfortable in public again by the end of the first week.
Firmness and any lumpiness settle. The area begins to look smaller rather than swollen.
Leave at least four weeks. Kybella is not a treatment to have the week before a wedding.
About a month, so the tissue settles enough to judge what is left to treat.
Destroyed fat cells do not return. Maintaining a stable weight protects the result.
