Specialty panels vary in price depending on what is being measured, so they are quoted by phone. Call your nearest studio and they will tell you what a given test costs and what it covers. The consultation is complimentary, and we would rather talk you out of a test that will not change anything than sell it to you.

Advanced diagnostic testing · Biological age

    In short

Advanced diagnostic testing at BHRC covers the panels that sit beyond standard blood work: biological age and epigenetic markers, food sensitivity, micronutrient status and metabolic markers. BHRC offers both the MEscreen and SystemAge kits alongside conventional panels. Every result is reviewed by a physician against your symptoms, and testing is only recommended where the answer would actually change what we do.

For when the standard panel came back normal

Most people who end up here have already had blood work and been told everything looks fine, and they still feel tired, foggy, bloated or older than they should. Sometimes that is because the standard panel did not measure the thing that is actually wrong. Advanced testing covers what sits outside a routine panel: how your body is ageing at a cellular level, which foods your system reacts to, whether you are genuinely depleted in something, and how your metabolism is actually behaving. It is also easy to over-order, and a test that will not change what we do is just an expensive number. So the consultation decides what is worth running, and sometimes the answer is nothing.

    How it works

    How Advanced Testing Works Here

Question first, then the test that answers it.

It starts with what you are actually trying to find out. Persistent fatigue, unexplained bloating, skin that flares without a pattern and feeling older than your age all point at different panels, and that conversation decides which is worth running.

Collection depends on the test. Some are a standard blood draw in studio, some are kits you complete at home and return. You will be told exactly how to collect and when, because a mishandled sample is a wasted one.

Turnaround runs from a few days to a few weeks depending on the panel. Epigenetic and specialty testing takes longer than routine blood work.

Then the part that matters: a physician reads the result against your symptoms and your other labs, and tells you what it means in plain terms and what, if anything, to do about it.

    Biological age and epigenetic testing

Starts working: SystemAge. Lasts: Weeks. Estimates how your body is ageing relative to your chronological age using methylation patterns. Genuinely interesting, and most useful as a repeated measure over time rather than as a single number. ⚠️ Different providers use different algorithms and results are not directly comparable between them.

    Micronutrient testing

Starts working: Blood panel. Lasts: Days. Vitamin, mineral and antioxidant status. The most straightforwardly actionable test on this page: if you are depleted in something, that is fixable, and it is a common finding behind unexplained fatigue.

    Food sensitivity testing

Starts working: IgG-based panels. Lasts: Weeks. ⚠️ Be aware of the debate here, because we would rather you heard it from us. IgG food sensitivity testing is not accepted by mainstream allergy bodies as a diagnostic for food allergy, and a positive IgG result may simply indicate exposure. Some patients find the results a useful starting point for an elimination trial. It is not a diagnosis and we will not present it as one.

    Metabolic markers

Starts working: Blood panel. Lasts: Days. HbA1c, insulin and lipids. Insulin resistance in particular is invisible without testing and makes a real difference to weight and energy. Well-evidenced and clearly actionable.

What Advanced Testing Can Tell You

And where the honest answer is that it cannot.

A BHRC provider preparing a diagnostic test
    Whether you are actually depleted

Micronutrient status, measured rather than guessed at by a supplement aisle.

    How you are ageing

Biological age against chronological age, most useful tracked over time.

    What your metabolism is doing

HbA1c and insulin. Insulin resistance is invisible without testing.

    A starting point for elimination

Food sensitivity results as a hypothesis to test with your diet, not as a diagnosis.

    Whether a treatment is working

Repeat testing on therapy. Direction over time beats any single snapshot.

⚠️ Not diagnose a food allergy

IgG testing is not accepted for that. True allergy testing belongs with an allergist.

⚠️ Not always be worth running

If a result will not change what we do, it is an expensive number. We will say so.

    Getting a usable result

Collection matters as much as the panel.

A BHRC physician explaining test results
    Follow the instructions

Fasting, timing and handling vary by test and a mishandled sample is a wasted one.

    At-home kits

Return them promptly. Sample degradation is the main cause of an unusable result.

    Tell us your supplements

Biotin in particular interferes with several assays. High-dose vitamins can skew micronutrient results.

    Be honest about diet

Food sensitivity results are meaningless without knowing what you have actually been eating.

    Wait for the review

A result without interpretation is not worth much, and specialty panels are easy to misread alone.

    Retest to see direction

Especially for biological age, where a single reading tells you far less than a trend.

    Act on what is actionable

Depletion, insulin resistance and thyroid findings are all treatable. Start there.

    Is it for you

    Who advanced testing is for

Advanced testing is most useful when a standard panel has already come back normal and something still does not add up.

Advanced testing may be worthwhile if you

    • Have had standard blood work come back normal but still feel unwell
    • Are persistently fatigued with no explanation from routine labs
    • Have unexplained bloating, digestive symptoms or skin flares
    • Want to track how you are ageing over time rather than get a one-off number
    • Are already on a hormone, thyroid or weight loss programme and want deeper markers
    • Suspect you may be depleted in something and would rather measure than guess

Advanced testing may not be worth it if you

    • Have not yet had a standard blood panel — start there, it is cheaper and better evidenced
    • Want a diagnosis of true food allergy, which needs an allergist rather than IgG testing
    • Are looking for a single number to explain everything, which no test on this page provides
    • Would not change anything based on the result, in which case it is an expensive number
    • Are acutely unwell, which distorts many markers and belongs with a physician first

Your provider will tell you when a test is not worth running. We would rather talk you out of one than sell you a panel that changes nothing.

    Frequently asked

    Advanced testing questions, answered

    What is SystemAge?

SystemAge is a biological age assessment offered at BHRC. Biological age testing estimates how your body is ageing relative to your chronological age, typically using methylation patterns. Ask your provider for the current specification of the panel and exactly what it reports, and they will go through it with you before you commit.

    What is MEscreen?

MEscreen is one of two specialty screening kits BHRC offers alongside conventional blood panels. Your provider will explain exactly what it measures and whether it fits what you are trying to find out. If it does not, they will tell you that.

    Is biological age testing accurate?

It is a reasonable estimate rather than a precise measurement, and the honest way to use it is as a repeated measure rather than a single verdict. Different providers use different algorithms, so results are not directly comparable between companies. What is genuinely useful is whether your number moves in the right direction over a year of changed habits or treatment.

Does food sensitivity testing actually work?

This deserves a straight answer. IgG-based food sensitivity testing is not accepted by mainstream allergy organisations as a diagnostic test for food allergy, and a positive IgG result may simply reflect exposure to a food rather than a problem with it. Some patients find the results a useful starting point for a structured elimination trial. We will not present it as a diagnosis, and if you may have a true food allergy you should see an allergist.

How much does advanced testing cost?

It depends on the panel, so it is quoted by phone rather than listed. Call your nearest studio on (310) 912-7271. The consultation is complimentary and we will tell you if a test is not worth running.

Do I need this if I have already had blood work?

Often not. If a standard panel answered your question, that is the cheaper and better-evidenced route and we will say so. Advanced testing is for when the standard panel came back normal and you still do not feel right, or when you want to track something over time.

Are these tests covered by insurance?

Specialty and wellness panels generally are not, and you should assume they are out of pocket unless told otherwise. Ask when you call so there are no surprises.

How is this different from your blood panel page?

Blood panel testing covers hormone, thyroid and metabolic panels, which is what most people need. This page covers the specialty testing that sits beyond a routine panel: biological age, epigenetic markers, food sensitivity and micronutrient status. Most people should start with the standard panel.

We will talk you out of tests

A panel whose result would not change anything is an expensive number. That conversation costs us the sale and it is the right one to have.

We are straight about the weaker evidence

IgG food sensitivity testing is not accepted as an allergy diagnostic and we say so on the page rather than in the small print.

    A physician reads it

Specialty panels are easy to misread alone. Interpretation against your symptoms and your other labs is the actual product.

    Start with the standard panel

Most people do not need advanced testing. If routine blood work answers your question, that is cheaper and better evidenced.
