GHRH Analog

Sermorelin
5mg

Promotes natural pituitary GH release patterns.

Sermorelin is a growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analog that stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and release growth hormone naturally. By mimicking the body's own GHRH, it supports pulsatile GH secretion patterns, which decline with age.

Sermorelin 5mg

A therapeutic dosage designed to support natural growth hormone production through GHRH pathway stimulation.

What is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a bioidentical synthetic peptide comprising the first 29 amino acids of naturally occurring growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH). This precise sequence is the active fragment responsible for stimulating the pituitary gland to produce and secrete growth hormone.

Unlike direct growth hormone replacement, Sermorelin works with your body's existing regulatory systems. It binds to GHRH receptors on somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary, triggering the natural cascade that leads to growth hormone release. This approach preserves the body's feedback mechanisms, allowing for physiologically appropriate pulsatile secretion patterns.

As we age, GHRH production and pituitary responsiveness decline, leading to reduced GH output and associated age-related changes. Sermorelin therapy provides a GHRH signal to the pituitary, which in small studies of older adults raised GH and IGF-1 levels.

Natural GHRH Pathway Stimulation

Sermorelin works through the body's natural growth hormone regulatory pathway to promote physiological GH production and release.

GHRH Receptor Binding

Sermorelin binds to specific GHRH receptors on pituitary somatotroph cells, mimicking natural growth hormone-releasing hormone to initiate the GH production cascade.

Pituitary Activation

Receptor activation triggers intracellular signaling pathways that stimulate synthesis and secretion of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary gland.

Pulsatile Secretion

Unlike continuous GH replacement, Sermorelin promotes natural pulsatile release patterns that align with the body's circadian rhythms and regulatory feedback loops.

Sermorelin at BHRC: the essentials

What it is
Sermorelin is the first 29 amino acids of human growth-hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH 1-29), the shortest fragment with the full activity of the natural hormone. It signals the pituitary to release growth hormone rather than supplying growth hormone itself.
History
It was once FDA-approved under the brand Geref, used in children for growth hormone testing and treatment. The manufacturer discontinued Geref in 2008, and FDA later determined it was not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness.
How it is given
A small subcutaneous injection, usually in the evening, on a schedule written by your BHRC provider after labs.
Typical course
Several months with lab checkpoints, since IGF-1 and body-composition changes take time to assess.
Who it is for
Adults with symptoms they attribute to age-related changes in the growth hormone axis, whose labs and history allow it, and who prefer a pituitary-signaling approach to growth hormone injections.
Where
Consultations at BHRC's Los Angeles-area clinics in West Hollywood, West Los Angeles, Westlake Village and Valencia, and at our Nevada, Arizona and Houston locations.
Regulatory status
Compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved. Details below.

Your plan

What a Sermorelin plan at BHRC involves

1

1. Symptoms and history

A BHRC provider asks what has changed: sleep, recovery, body composition, energy. Many of these have other causes, including low testosterone or estrogen changes, thyroid problems, sleep apnea, depression, alcohol and medicines, so these are screened first. Cancer history, diabetes, pregnancy plans and eye disease related to diabetes are checked because they rule sermorelin out or change the plan.

2

2. Baseline labs

IGF-1 is the central lab, because it reflects growth hormone activity over time. Fasting glucose, HbA1c, a lipid panel, thyroid tests and a metabolic panel are usually added, along with sex hormones where symptoms point that way. Body composition or waist measurement gives a physical baseline. If you have had IGF-1 measured elsewhere, bring the result and the lab name, because reference ranges differ between laboratories and a number means little without its range.

3

3. Choosing sermorelin or an alternative

Your provider compares sermorelin with the other GH-axis options BHRC lists, such as CJC-1295 with ipamorelin, ipamorelin alone, tesamorelin or the ipamorelin/sermorelin blend, and with simply treating another cause found in the labs. Sermorelin's advantage is its long clinical history; its limitation is a short action that depends on a responsive pituitary. Research measuring hypothalamic GHRH output has suggested a relative GHRH deficiency in aging, which is the rationale for replacing the signal rather than the hormone, but it does not mean every individual will respond.

4

4. Teaching and the first weeks

You are shown injection technique, storage and site rotation. Evening timing is usually chosen because natural growth hormone release is largest during deep sleep. Early check-ins cover injection-site reactions, flushing, headache and any swelling or tingling in the hands. If evening injections disrupt your sleep rather than help it, timing is reviewed rather than abandoned straight away.

5

5. IGF-1-guided review

A repeat IGF-1 shows whether your pituitary is responding. The provider aims for a level within an age-appropriate range, not the highest number possible. Body composition, sleep and recovery are reviewed alongside the labs before deciding to continue, adjust or stop. The review also revisits the original reasons for starting, so the plan stays tied to your goal rather than to a lab number alone.

Timeline

What to expect with Sermorelin, step by step

  1. Weeks 1 to 2

Injection-site redness, brief flushing or headache are the most common early effects. Some people report deeper sleep; others notice nothing at all, which is not a sign that it is failing.

  2. Weeks 4 to 8

First IGF-1 recheck in many plans, drawn at a consistent time of day. A flat IGF-1 suggests the pituitary is not responding well, which changes the plan.

  3. Months 3 to 6

The window in which body-composition changes, if any, become measurable. Studies of GHRH 1-29 in older adults ran from a few weeks to about five months.

  4. Ongoing

Labs are repeated at intervals for as long as sermorelin is used, and the need for it is reviewed rather than assumed. Planned breaks are discussed at each long-term review.

Is it right for you?

Who Sermorelin may suit, and who should not use it

May be a fit if

  • Adults with a low-normal or low IGF-1 for their age and symptoms that fit, after other causes are addressed
  • People who want a pituitary-signaling approach rather than growth hormone injections
  • Patients willing to do baseline and follow-up labs for as long as they use it
  • Those who live or work near a BHRC clinic and can attend reviews

Not a fit if

  • Active cancer or a history of cancer without oncology clearance
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Diabetes that is not well controlled, or diabetic eye disease
  • Known pituitary disease, unless managed with an endocrinologist
  • Untreated sleep apnea
  • Competitive athletes under WADA testing; GHRH and its analogues are prohibited in sport

Monitoring

How BHRC monitors Sermorelin

IGF-1 is the main safety and effect marker and is rechecked at intervals; your provider sets a target range at the start. Fasting glucose and HbA1c are repeated because the growth hormone axis affects insulin sensitivity. Thyroid tests may be repeated, since changes in growth hormone activity can affect thyroid hormone measurements.

At each check-in the BHRC clinical team asks about swelling, joint pain, tingling or numbness in the hands, headaches, snoring and sleep. These are the effects seen when growth hormone activity runs too high, and they are reasons to reduce or pause. A systematic review of growth hormone given to healthy older people found these side effects were common, which is one reason BHRC keeps IGF-1 within a defined range.

Because sermorelin depends on your pituitary responding, an IGF-1 that does not rise is useful information. Rather than increasing indefinitely, the provider reviews whether a different option, or no GH-axis treatment, makes more sense.

Your provider also checks in on the basics that drive growth hormone release naturally: regular deep sleep, resistance training, adequate protein and limited evening alcohol. These do not replace a prescription, but they shape how well any GH-axis plan works.

Dosing, reconstitution and cycling detail is covered in our Sermorelin dosage guide. Your own plan is set by your provider at the consultation.

Regulatory status

Sermorelin: FDA status and how it is prescribed

Status, reviewed October 2026: Compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved. Sermorelin acetate was previously FDA-approved as Geref; the manufacturer discontinued it in 2008, and in 2013 FDA determined that Geref was not withdrawn from sale for reasons of safety or effectiveness. A compounded preparation is not the same product as Geref, and FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are dispensed. At BHRC, sermorelin is prescribed only after a consultation and baseline labs with a licensed BHRC provider, it is not offered to diagnose, treat or prevent any disease or to reverse aging, and GHRH and its analogues are prohibited in WADA-tested sport.

Sermorelin: cost, consultation and safety questions

Where can I get sermorelin in Los Angeles?

BHRC providers offer sermorelin consultations at our clinics in West Hollywood, West Los Angeles, Westlake Village and Valencia. A prescription is written only after a consultation and baseline labs, and follow-up labs can be drawn at or near your clinic. If you split time between Los Angeles and Las Vegas or Phoenix, your care can continue at our Summerlin, Henderson or Paradise Valley clinics with the same records.

Is sermorelin FDA-approved?

Not in its current compounded form. Sermorelin acetate was previously approved as Geref for children with growth hormone deficiency, and as a diagnostic test. The manufacturer stopped selling Geref in 2008, and in 2013 FDA published a determination that it was not withdrawn for safety or effectiveness reasons. Compounded sermorelin is not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality.

Sermorelin vs HGH: which is better?

They work differently. Growth hormone injections replace the hormone directly. Sermorelin asks the pituitary to release its own, so the body's feedback control still applies. In older men, GHRH 1-29 raised GH and IGF-1 levels in small studies. Growth hormone itself is FDA-approved only for specific conditions, and in healthy older adults it causes frequent side effects. Your provider will explain which fits your labs.

Sermorelin vs CJC-1295 and ipamorelin?

Sermorelin is the original, short-acting GHRH fragment with the longest clinical history. CJC-1295 is a modified GHRH analogue designed to last longer, and ipamorelin adds a second signal through the ghrelin receptor. More signals mean more monitoring. Many patients start with one approach and change only if labs and symptoms call for it. Switching is a provider decision based on a repeat IGF-1 and how you are doing, not a routine upgrade.

How is sermorelin dosed?

Your provider sets the amount and timing after labs. For educational background, see our Sermorelin dosage guide, which does not replace your own written plan.

Does sermorelin help with hair growth?

There is no good evidence that sermorelin treats hair loss, and it is not prescribed for that purpose at BHRC. Thinning hair has many causes, and our hair restoration consultations start with finding the cause.

How much does sermorelin cost?

We do not post prices on this page. The total depends on the length of your plan, vial supply, the baseline and follow-up labs, and review visits. You receive an itemized quote at consultation. Because sermorelin is used over months, the quote separates the initial labs and visit from the ongoing cost of supply and monitoring, so you can see the full picture before deciding.

Who should not take sermorelin?

People with active cancer or a cancer history without oncology clearance, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people with poorly controlled diabetes or diabetic eye disease, and anyone with untreated sleep apnea or known pituitary disease unless an endocrinologist is involved. Tested athletes should not use it. People taking glucocorticoids or thyroid medicine can still be candidates, but those medicines affect how the pituitary and labs behave, so the provider reviews them carefully first.

Will I need labs the whole time?

Yes. IGF-1 and glucose markers are checked at intervals for as long as you use sermorelin. If you stop, the provider explains what to expect and whether any follow-up labs are needed. Labs can usually be drawn at a BHRC clinic or at a nearby commercial lab and sent to your provider, which keeps monitoring practical for busy schedules.

How do I start?

Book through Start Your Journey or call your nearest clinic. Bring any recent labs, including IGF-1 if you have had it measured, and a list of medicines, supplements and hormones you take, including anything previously used for growth hormone or testosterone.

Frequently Asked

How does Sermorelin differ from synthetic growth hormone?

Sermorelin stimulates your body to produce its own growth hormone naturally through the pituitary gland, rather than replacing GH directly. This preserves the body's regulatory feedback mechanisms and promotes more physiological pulsatile release patterns, although long-term comparative safety has not been established.

What is the typical dosing protocol?

Sermorelin is typically administered via subcutaneous injection, often before bedtime to align with the body's natural nocturnal GH secretion patterns. Dosing is individualized based on your hormone levels, body composition, and therapeutic goals. Your physician will determine the optimal frequency and dosage for your specific needs.

When can I expect to see results?

Initial improvements in sleep quality, energy, and recovery may be noticed within 2-4 weeks. More substantial changes in body composition, skin quality, and overall vitality typically develop over 3-6 months as natural GH production optimizes and cumulative benefits accrue.

Are there side effects?

When properly dosed under medical supervision, Sermorelin is generally well-tolerated. Some may experience mild injection site reactions, temporary flushing, or slight headache. These typically resolve quickly. Because Sermorelin works through natural pathways, it carries a different safety profile than direct GH replacement. Regular monitoring ensures optimal safety.

Do I need ongoing lab monitoring?

Yes, regular laboratory testing is essential. Baseline testing measures IGF-1 levels and other relevant markers. Follow-up testing (typically every 3-6 months) ensures therapy is effective, allows for dosing adjustments, and monitors for any contraindications or adverse effects.

Can Sermorelin be combined with other therapies?

Sermorelin can often be integrated with other hormone optimization protocols under medical guidance. Some patients benefit from combining it with other peptides like Ipamorelin for synergistic effects. Your physician will evaluate potential interactions and design a comprehensive approach tailored to your health profile.

How long should I continue therapy?

Therapy duration varies based on individual goals and response. Some benefit from 6-12 month protocols, while others maintain longer-term therapy. Unlike direct GH replacement, Sermorelin may help restore more sustainable pituitary function. Your physician will regularly assess progress and determine optimal duration based on your results and objectives.
