In short
CO2 laser resurfacing uses a fractional carbon dioxide laser to remove microscopic columns of damaged skin and heat the tissue beneath them. The removed columns are replaced by new skin as you heal, and the heat drives collagen remodelling underneath, which is why it treats deep wrinkles, scarring and sun damage in a way non-ablative devices cannot.
Most skin devices work on the surface and hope the change carries downward. CO2 does both at once. The fractional beam removes columns of damaged tissue outright and heats what sits beneath them, so you get new surface skin and remodelled collagen from the same pass. That is why it reaches scarring and deep lines that peels and microneedling soften but do not resolve, and why it asks for a week of your calendar in return.

Depth, not session count, is the main variable with CO2. A single ablative pass can do what three non-ablative sessions do, at the cost of a week of recovery. Your provider sets the trade-off with you at consultation.

How it works
Understanding what the laser is doing explains both the result and the recovery.
A fractional beam divides the laser into thousands of microscopic columns, treating a fraction of the surface and leaving the skin between each column intact to speed healing.
Each column removes damaged tissue and delivers heat into the dermis below, triggering collagen contraction and new collagen production.
Over the following days the surface reknits from the untreated skin around each column, and collagen remodelling continues for months.

Aftercare
CO2 asks for real downtime. Knowing the shape of it in advance is most of what makes it manageable.
Skin feels hot and tight, like strong sunburn. Swelling begins. Keep it cool, occluded and completely out of the sun.
Swelling peaks, often most noticeable around the eyes. Oozing and crusting are normal at ablative depths.
Skin begins to flake and peel as the new surface arrives underneath. Do not pick it. This is the part people find hardest.
Most patients are presentable and back in makeup. Skin looks pink and feels tight.
Pinkness fades. The first real change in texture and tone becomes visible.
Collagen remodelling continues. The full result arrives well after the recovery is forgotten.
Daily SPF is not optional. New sun damage undoes what the laser just corrected.

After treatment, keep the skin clean and moisturized, avoid direct sun exposure, and use a high-SPF sunscreen daily.
