Skinvive by Juvederm

Skinvive is not a filler and adds no volume. It is an injectable moisturiser, and being clear about that is the difference between delighted and disappointed.

$350 a syringe, and one syringe covers both cheeks for most people. It is frequently added to a filler or neurotoxin appointment rather than booked alone, because it does a completely different job from either and the three combine well.

    Skinvive · Cheeks

    In short

Skinvive by Juvederm is the first and only FDA-approved injectable skin hydrator in the United States. Tiny microdroplets of hyaluronic acid are placed just under the surface of the cheeks, where they hold water and improve smoothness and glow for around six months. It is $350 a syringe at BHRC. It is not a dermal filler: it adds no volume, lifts nothing, and will not change your face shape.

An injectable moisturiser, not a filler

Almost everyone who books Skinvive expects filler, and it is not filler. Dermal fillers are dense gels placed deep to create volume and structure. Skinvive is the opposite: extremely fine microdroplets of hyaluronic acid placed just beneath the surface, where they do nothing structural at all and simply hold water in the skin. The result is smoother texture and the kind of glow people describe as glassy. Your face shape does not change, nothing is lifted, and nowhere looks fuller. If what you want is cheekbones, you want Voluma. If what you want is skin that looks hydrated and reflects light properly, this is the thing that does that.

Skinvive against the things people confuse it with

    Different jobs entirely.

    AreaTypical unitsCost
    SkinviveHydration and glow$350

These are complements, not alternatives. A common combination is neurotoxin for lines, filler for structure and Skinvive for skin quality, because each addresses something the others cannot.

    How it works

    How Skinvive Works

Hydration held in the skin, not volume placed under it.

Hyaluronic acid binds water, holding many times its own weight. In a dermal filler it is cross-linked into a firm gel so it creates structure. In Skinvive it is formulated to stay soft and disperse.

It is placed as a series of tiny microdroplets in the superficial layer of the cheek skin, using a very fine needle. Depth is the whole difference: filler goes deep, this stays shallow.

Those microdroplets draw and hold water in the dermis, which improves smoothness, suppleness and light reflection. Clinical work also shows improved skin hydration measures rather than any change in facial volume.

It is gradually metabolised over about six months, at which point the effect fades and it is repeated.

    Which product

Skinvive vs. filler, and why it matters

The single most common misunderstanding in this category.

A BHRC injector comparing Skinvive and dermal filler
    Skinvive

Starts working: 1 to 3 days of bumps. Lasts: About 6 months. $350. Microdroplets placed superficially for hydration, smoothness and glow. Adds no volume, lifts nothing, changes no contours. If your complaint is dull, dry or crepey-looking cheek skin, this is the right treatment.

    Dermal filler

Starts working: 1 to 7 days bruising. Lasts: 6 to 24 months. From $700. A dense gel placed deep to create volume and structure. If your complaint is flat cheeks or a soft jawline, this is the right treatment and Skinvive will do nothing for you.

    ⚠️ The mistake

Starts working: n/a. Lasts: n/a. Booking Skinvive expecting cheekbones. It is the most common disappointment in this category and it is entirely avoidable, which is why we set the expectation before you book rather than after.

    Together

Starts working: Varies. Lasts: Varies. They combine well and are frequently done at the same visit: filler restores the structure, Skinvive improves the quality of the skin sitting over it.

What Skinvive Can Do For You

Kept precise, because precision is the point here.

    A BHRC injector administering Skinvive
    Smoother cheek texture

The primary indication and where it performs best.

    That glassy, hydrated look

Skin that reflects light properly rather than looking flat and dry.

    Improve fine crepiness

Superficial hydration plumps very fine lines from beneath.

    Work under makeup

Better hydrated skin sits better under foundation, which is a common reason people repeat it.

    Pair with anything

Combines with filler, neurotoxin and skin treatments without conflict.

    ⚠️ Not add volume

None at all. No cheekbones, no lift, no contour change. If that is what you want, you want filler.

⚠️ Not treat deep wrinkles or laxity

Static wrinkles need resurfacing or neurotoxin; laxity needs tightening. This treats skin quality only.

    Aftercare

    After Skinvive

A short, slightly lumpy 48 hours, then nothing.

A BHRC provider reviewing Skinvive results with a patient
    First few hours

Small raised bumps at each injection point. Expected, and the most-asked-about part of this treatment.

    24 to 72 hours

The bumps settle as the product disperses. Do not massage them unless told to.

    Bruising

Possible but usually minor, since the needle is very fine and stays superficial.

    Makeup

    Usually from the next day.

    Avoid

Heavy exercise, heat and alcohol for 24 hours.

    Weeks 2 to 4

The glow becomes obvious. It is gradual rather than immediate.

    About 6 months

Repeat when it fades. There is no course to complete.

    Is it for you

    Who Skinvive suits

Skinvive suits people whose complaint is about skin quality rather than facial shape.

Skinvive may suit you if you

    • Have dull, dry or flat-looking cheek skin
    • Want the glassy, hydrated look rather than more volume
    • Are happy with your facial structure and want the skin over it to look better
    • Find makeup sits badly because your skin is dehydrated
    • Are already booked for filler or neurotoxin and want to treat skin quality too
    • Want something low-commitment with no course to complete

Skinvive is not what you want if you

    • Want more defined cheekbones or a lifted mid-face — that is structural filler
    • Are treating deep static wrinkles, which need resurfacing or neurotoxin
    • Are treating skin laxity or sagging, which needs tightening
    • Have an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area
    • Expect an immediate dramatic change, since the glow builds over 2 to 4 weeks

Your injector will confirm that hydration rather than volume is what you are after before booking it, because that is where this treatment usually disappoints people.

    Your timeline

    What happens, and when

Quick, and the expectation-setting matters more than the procedure.

    1. ConsultationWhat it doesYour injector confirms that hydration rather than volume is what you actually want. If it is volume, you will be steered to filler.
    2. Treatment20 to 30 minutesNumbing, then microdroplets across both cheeks. One syringe usually covers both.
    3. 48 to 72 hoursBumps settleThe raised points disperse. This is the part people worry about and it resolves.
    4. 2 to 4 weeksThe glowGradual rather than immediate. Repeat at around six months.

    Frequently asked

    Skinvive questions, answered

    Is Skinvive a filler?

No, and this is the most important thing to understand about it. Dermal fillers are dense gels placed deep to create volume and structure. Skinvive is fine microdroplets of hyaluronic acid placed just under the surface to hold water in the skin. It adds no volume, lifts nothing and does not change your face shape. It improves how your skin looks and feels, not how your face is shaped.

How much does Skinvive cost at BHRC?

$350 a syringe, and one syringe covers both cheeks for most people. It is commonly added to a filler or neurotoxin appointment rather than booked on its own.

    How long does Skinvive last?

Around six months for most people, after which it is repeated. There is no course to complete and no commitment; you simply repeat it when the effect fades.

    What are the bumps afterwards?

Small raised points at each injection site, and they are expected rather than a complication. They settle within 24 to 72 hours as the product disperses. Do not massage them unless your injector specifically tells you to.

    Will it help my cheekbones?

No. If you want more defined cheekbones you want a structural filler such as Juvederm Voluma, which is a completely different product placed at a completely different depth. We would rather tell you that at the consultation than have you spend $350 on the wrong thing.

    Is Skinvive FDA-approved?

Yes. It is the first and only FDA-approved injectable skin hydrator in the United States, approved for improving cheek skin smoothness. Worth noting that the approval is specifically for the cheeks.

Can I have it with filler or Botox?

Yes, and that is how most people have it. The three do genuinely different jobs: neurotoxin relaxes movement lines, filler restores structure, Skinvive improves the quality of the skin over the top. They are commonly done at the same visit.

    Does it hurt?

Not much. The needle is very fine and stays superficial, and topical numbing is applied first. Most people find it more comfortable than filler.
