1 · What laser hair removal in Beverly Hills actually costs
Beverly Hills is one of the most price-opaque markets in aesthetics, and hair removal is the worst offender in it. Some clinics quote per session. Some quote per package. Some quote a monthly figure that turns out to be financing. And a few quote a number so low that it can only be a single pass on a single small area, which is not a treatment — it is a sample.

2 · How the laser actually finds the hair
Laser hair removal works on a principle called selective photothermolysis, and once you understand it, almost every rule about the treatment stops sounding arbitrary.
The laser emits a wavelength of light that melanin — the pigment in your hair — absorbs more strongly than the surrounding tissue does. That absorbed light becomes heat. If the pulse lasts the right length of time, the heat stays concentrated in the follicle long enough to damage the matrix and the stem cells that regenerate the hair, and then dissipates before it can injure the skin around it. The pigment is the target. The heat is the mechanism. Everything else is engineering.
This is the single most useful thing to understand about the treatment. Your follicles are not synchronized. At any moment only a fraction of them are in anagen, the active growth phase where the follicle is packed with pigment and connected to the stem cells that matter. Those are the ones a session destroys. The rest are resting, invisible to the laser, and will grow back on schedule — not because the treatment failed, but because there was nothing there to treat.
Wait four to eight weeks and a different cohort has entered anagen. That is the entire logic of a treatment course, and it is why a clinic that promises results in one or two visits is either misunderstanding the biology or counting on you not to.
3 · Wavelength, skin tone, and the part that matters most in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is one of the most Fitzpatrick-diverse markets in the country, which makes wavelength selection less of a technical footnote and more of the whole safety conversation.
The problem is that melanin in your hair is not the only melanin in the treatment field. Melanin in your epidermis absorbs the same light. On lighter skin there is enough contrast between the two that the follicle wins the competition easily. On deeper skin tones, the epidermis competes — and if the wavelength is wrong, the surface of your skin absorbs energy that was meant for the follicle. That is the mechanism behind almost every laser hair removal burn and pigment change you have ever read about.
Nd:YAG at 1064 nm sits at the far end of that range. Melanin absorbs it comparatively weakly, so far less energy is intercepted by the epidermis on the way down — which is exactly why it is the standard for Fitzpatrick V and VI. Diode at 810 nm is the workhorse in the middle, effective through about type V when paired with aggressive contact cooling.
The practical version: ask which wavelength a clinic is putting on your skin, and ask why. A studio that runs only one platform will tell you it works for everyone. A studio that runs two will tell you which one it is using on you.
4 · Why blonde, grey, red and white hair do not respond
If the laser finds hair by finding pigment, then hair with no pigment is invisible to it. That is the whole explanation, and it is worth stating plainly because it is not a dosing problem that a stronger setting can solve.
Blonde, grey, white and red hair contain little or no eumelanin — the specific pigment these wavelengths target. There is nothing in the follicle to absorb the light, so no heat is generated where it needs to be. Turning up the energy does not fix this; it just moves more heat into the skin, which is how you get a burn without getting a result.
Electrolysis remains the option for unpigmented hair. It works follicle by follicle with an electric current rather than light, so pigment is irrelevant — it is slower and more tedious, but it is the honest answer when the laser has nothing to aim at.
5 · Sessions, spacing, and what the research actually shows
This is where expectations either get set correctly or get set up to fail.
The clinically accurate term is permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal, and the distinction is not marketing hedging. A 2006 Cochrane review of eleven randomized trials found roughly 50% hair reduction sustained to six months with alexandrite and diode lasers, and noted that long-term removal was not documented for any device. More recent work has done better with modern multi-wavelength protocols — a 2025 study using a rotational Nd:YAG, diode and alexandrite approach reported 75.07% reduction at six months across body areas after three sessions.
Spacing matters as much as the number of sessions. Too close together and you are treating the same telogen follicles twice while the anagen ones have not cycled in yet. Too far apart and you lose the compounding effect. Four to eight weeks is the working window, and facial areas generally sit at the shorter end because facial hair cycles faster than leg hair.
6 · Shave. Do not wax. Here is why that rule exists.
Every clinic tells you to shave 24 hours before and not to wax, thread or pluck for six weeks beforehand. Almost none of them explain it, which makes it sound like a preference. It is not.
Waxing, threading, plucking and epilating pull the entire hair out, root included. That removes the exact thing the laser is aiming at. Arrive waxed and the follicle is empty — the light passes through and finds nothing to heat. You will have paid for a session that could not have worked.
Shaving does the opposite: it removes the part of the hair above the skin while leaving the pigmented shaft inside the follicle intact. That matters in both directions, because hair sitting above the skin absorbs energy at the surface, which produces singeing and surface burns rather than follicular heating. Shaved skin puts the target where it belongs and takes it away from where it causes trouble.
7 · Risks, and the ones worth actually asking about
Laser hair removal is a well-tolerated treatment in trained hands, and most side effects — redness, mild swelling around the follicles, a sunburn-like feeling for a few hours — resolve on their own. Three risks are worth understanding properly rather than skimming.
Pigment change
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the most common meaningful complication, and its risk is highest in Fitzpatrick types III through VI. It usually resolves over three to four months. Hypopigmentation is less common but more stubborn and is linked to excessive energy. Both are primarily a settings-and-wavelength problem, which is another way of saying they are primarily a provider problem.
Eye protection
Everyone in the room wears wavelength-rated eyewear, without exception. Nd:YAG at 1064 nm carries the highest ocular risk of the hair-removal wavelengths because it penetrates deep enough to reach the retina. Work near the eyes requires metal corneal shields, not goggles. If you are ever handed nothing to wear, that is the moment to stop.
Paradoxical hypertrichosis
A small number of patients grow more hair in or around a treated area. A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis across 22 studies and 9,733 patients put the pooled prevalence at about 3%, and found it is overwhelmingly a face-and-neck phenomenon — the rate at non-facial sites was 0.08%. The leading explanation is that sub-therapeutic heat stimulates dormant follicles rather than destroying them, which means the fix is adequate energy, not less of it.
