In short
Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) that helps your body build its own collagen. It is not an instant filler: results appear gradually from about a month and build over a series, usually two to three sessions spaced at least three to four weeks apart. Galderma reports results lasting up to two years. At Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center Sculptra costs $800 to $1,000 per vial depending on the clinic, and every treatment is performed by a licensed medical provider.
Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible material your body gradually breaks down. Injected beneath the skin as fine microparticles, it prompts the skin to lay down new collagen around them over the following weeks and months. That is why Galderma calls it a biostimulator rather than a filler: it does not sit there as a gel, it gives your own tissue a reason to rebuild.
Right after treatment the area looks fuller, but that is mostly water from mixing the product and some swelling, and it settles within a few days. The real change arrives slowly, from about a month after the first session, and builds across the series. People rarely look different from one week to the next, which is exactly why many patients choose it.
Sculptra has a long FDA history. It was first approved in 2004 to restore facial fat loss in people with HIV, approved for aesthetic use in 2009 for smile lines and other facial wrinkles, and in 2023 approved for fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region. Other uses, such as temples, jawline, neck, chest, hands or buttocks, are off-label: common in practice, but outside what the FDA has reviewed, and your provider should say so.
Units and cost
There is no official vials-per-area chart. This is what the FDA-reviewed studies actually used, and what a plan typically looks like.

Comparison
Three different ways to treat volume loss, and each suits a different person.
Poly-L-lactic acid. Stimulates collagen, so results build gradually from about a month across two to three sessions and can last up to two years. Priced per vial. Cannot be dissolved, which is why it is planned conservatively.
A gel that adds volume the same day and settles over about two weeks. Lasts roughly 6 to 18 months depending on product and area. Can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, which makes it the controllable choice for lips and first-time patients. See Restylane.
Calcium hydroxylapatite. Adds some volume immediately and also stimulates collagen, so it sits between the two. Often used along the jaw and on the backs of the hands. See biostimulators.
Yes, and many plans do: Sculptra for gradual, overall support, a hyaluronic acid filler for a specific area that needs definition now, and a neurotoxin such as Dysport for expression lines. Your provider sequences them so each can be judged on its own.
Safety
Tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, itching and small lumps at injection sites. According to Galderma these usually resolve within hours to a week; a bruise can take up to two weeks.
Small bumps under the skin can appear weeks or months later. They are usually felt rather than seen. In the original smile-line trial they occurred in about 8.6% of patients; a later study across several facial areas reported them in 28.4%, most often in marionette lines. Correct dilution, depth and the 5-5-5 massage routine reduce the risk, and your provider can treat them if they appear.
Anyone with an allergy to its ingredients, a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis, a tendency to keloids or raised scars, or an active skin infection or inflammation at the site. It has not been studied in pregnancy, breastfeeding or under 18, and it is not used in the lip itself or around the eyes.
Any injectable can, rarely, enter a blood vessel and cause skin damage or vision problems. This is why Sculptra should only be injected by a trained, licensed provider who knows the anatomy and the product.
Body
Sculptra's FDA approvals cover the face only. Buttock, hip and other body treatments are off-label uses, popular as a non-surgical butt lift, and they need far more product than the face, so they are always planned and priced at consultation.

How it works
About 30 to 45 minutes, including the time to talk through your plan.
Consultation and plan. Your provider assesses volume loss and skin quality, agrees the areas, and sets the vials and number of sessions.
Preparation. Sculptra is mixed with sterile water ahead of time, the skin is cleansed, and a numbing option is offered.
Injection, then massage. Small amounts are placed in a grid beneath the skin, and the area is massaged in clinic to spread the product evenly.
The 5-5-5 routine at home. Massage the area for five minutes, five times a day, for five days, and return after at least three to four weeks for the next session.

Aftercare
What you do in the first five days matters more with Sculptra than with any filler.
Massage the treated area in small circles for five minutes, five times a day, for five days after each session. It spreads the product evenly and is the simplest way to lower the risk of bumps.
Use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods in the first 24 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, heat and alcohol for the rest of the day.
The fullness right after treatment fades within days. That is expected; the real result arrives gradually from about a month.
Sessions are spaced at least three to four weeks apart, so each one can be assessed before the next is planned.
Aftercare
