Emsculpt NEO in West Los Angeles — Cost, Sessions and What the Studies Actually Found
Emsculpt NEO · West Los Angeles
Four sessions, thirty minutes each, from $850 — and an honest account of what the device is cleared for versus what the studies measured.

1. How it works
Emsculpt NEO delivers two energies simultaneously through one applicator.
HIFEM — high-intensity focused electromagnetic field. A rapidly changing magnetic field induces depolarising currents in motor neurons, producing supramaximal muscle contractions at frequencies you cannot achieve voluntarily. The proposed effect is muscle hypertrophy via satellite-cell activation.
Synchronised radiofrequency. Resistive heating of subcutaneous adipose tissue. The manufacturer’s account is that the RF pre-heats muscle — reducing warm-up time and improving contraction quality — while raising adipose temperature enough to trigger adipocyte apoptosis.
2. The clearance question — and it matters
The accurate version is not complicated: Emsculpt NEO is FDA-cleared for non-invasive lipolysis and circumference reduction of the abdomen and thighs. BTL’s HIFEM-only devices carry separate clearances for abdominal tone and strengthening. The muscle-hypertrophy percentages you see quoted come from published studies, not from the device’s cleared indications.
One more detail from the record: the 2019 clearance restricted use to skin types I–III. The expansion to types I–VI came with the 2021 clearance. If a clinic is running an older unit, that restriction applied to it.
3. The 25% and 30% figures — where they come from
These are real published numbers, and the evidence is genuinely stronger than most aesthetic devices have. It also has a specific shape that should be stated.
What supports the claims. The numbers are reproducible across multiple body sites and investigator groups, clustering tightly — fat −25% to −31%, muscle +23% to +26%. Measurement is by MRI, an objective modality, not photography or investigator impression. And a sham-controlled randomised trial exists (72 participants, 24 of them sham controls) whose numbers align with the open-label studies. That is stronger evidence than most devices in aesthetics have.
What limits them. Five things, and we would want you to know all five:
- Sample sizes are small — n=16 to n=72 across the whole set.
- Follow-up is three months in essentially every study. There is no published evidence that muscle gains persist beyond three months without maintenance. Skeletal muscle detrains; assuming durability is unwarranted.
- The same small group of investigators appears across nearly all the studies, several with manufacturer affiliations. Independent, non-manufacturer-funded replication is essentially absent.
- “Over 30 clinical studies” counts animal studies, case series of three to five people, and conference presentations that were not peer-reviewed.
- A 25% increase in muscle means cross-sectional area or thickness of one muscle on MRI in the treated plane. It is not total-body lean mass and it is not strength. Those get conflated constantly.
Reproducible MRI measurements from a sham-controlled trial are real evidence. Three-month follow-up and manufacturer-affiliated investigators are real limitations. Both things are true.
4. Protocol and what to expect
Maintenance sessions are commonly recommended in practice — but they have no published evidence base, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise. What the durability question really means is: if you treat your abdomen and then do nothing, you should not assume the muscle change persists indefinitely. Pairing a course with actual resistance training is the most defensible way to keep it.
5. Who should not have it
This device has a longer contraindication list than most, because of the electromagnetic field and the RF:
- Electronic implants — cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators, drug pumps.
- Metal implants, including a metallic IUD.
- Pregnancy, postpartum and nursing.
- Malignancy, cardiovascular disease, pulmonary insufficiency, Graves’ disease.
- Haemorrhagic conditions, acute inflammation, infection, fever, recent surgery, muscles in an acute phase of injury.
- Disturbed temperature or pain perception, or skin lacking normal sensation in the treatment area.
Applicators must contact skin directly — not over clothing, and not over scar tissue — and are not applied over the head, neck, spine, heart or testes. Bring your full history to the consultation; several of these are things people do not think to mention.
6. What it costs at West Los Angeles
| What you book | Price |
|---|---|
| Single session | from $850 |
| 4-session series | $3,000 |
| 8-session series | $5,500 |
Rejuvenation Club members save 20% on every treatment plus priority scheduling. The four-session series is the protocol matched to the published evidence and is the one we plan around. The eight-session package generally covers two areas rather than doubling up on one.

7. Emsculpt NEO or CoolSculpting?
They answer different questions. Cryolipolysis reduces a pinchable fat layer and does nothing for muscle. Emsculpt NEO does less fat reduction per area than a good cryolipolysis result in some studies, but adds a muscle component that cryolipolysis has no mechanism for.
The practical read: if your concern is a discrete, soft, pinchable bulge, cryolipolysis is the more direct answer. If your concern is that your midsection is flat but undefined, or that you train and the shape is not following, Emsculpt NEO is the one with a mechanism for that. Some people do both, sequenced.
And if there is meaningful weight to lose first, neither is the right starting point — that is a medical weight loss conversation, and doing it in that order costs less and produces a better result.

Questions we get asked
How much does Emsculpt NEO cost in Los Angeles?
At BHRC West Los Angeles: $850 for a single session, $3,000 for a four-session series and $5,500 for eight. The four-session series is the protocol used in the published studies.
Does it really build 25% more muscle?
Published MRI studies report roughly a 23–26% increase in treated-muscle thickness at three months. That is thickness or cross-sectional area of one muscle in the treated plane — not total lean mass and not strength. The studies are small, three months long and largely manufacturer-associated. It is also not what the device is FDA-cleared for.
Is it FDA-approved?
It is FDA-cleared, not approved — and the clearance covers non-invasive lipolysis and circumference reduction of the abdomen and thighs. The muscle indications belong to BTL’s separate HIFEM-only Emsculpt devices under a different product code.
Does it hurt?
It is intense rather than painful — strong involuntary contractions plus warmth. Intensity is dialled up gradually within the session. Most people describe the soreness afterwards as similar to a hard workout in that muscle group.
Will the results last?
No published study followed patients past three months, so nobody can answer that from data. Skeletal muscle detrains without use, which is the argument for pairing a course with resistance training rather than relying on maintenance sessions that have no evidence base.
Can I have it if I have a metal IUD?
No. Metallic IUDs are on the contraindication list, as are metal implants generally, electronic implants and drug pumps. Tell us about anything implanted, including things you have had for years and stopped thinking about.
