Does Microneedling Hurt? What It Feels Like, Area by Area
Skin · Microneedling
With numbing cream, most people find microneedling mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. Here is what it feels like, which areas are most sensitive, and how recovery goes.
What microneedling feels like
Microneedling uses a pen-style device with very fine needles to make tiny, controlled channels in the skin, which triggers its natural repair and collagen response. With numbing cream applied first, most patients describe it as a light scratching or vibrating sensation, sometimes compared with fine sandpaper. It is usually mildly uncomfortable rather than painful.
Before treatment the skin is cleansed and a topical numbing cream is left on for a while to take effect. Without it, microneedling would be noticeably sharper. That numbing step is the biggest single factor in how it feels.
Which areas feel it most
| Area | How it usually feels |
|---|---|
| Cheeks | The most comfortable area for most people. |
| Forehead and temples | More noticeable, because the skin sits close to bone. |
| Upper lip and around the nose | Often the most sensitive spots. |
| Jawline and neck | Usually comfortable. The neck is treated with a shallower depth. |
Microneedling vs. RF microneedling (Morpheus8): which hurts more?
RF microneedling adds radiofrequency heat delivered through the needles, and it often reaches deeper. That makes it more intense than standard microneedling. Most patients feel heat as well as pressure, especially at deeper settings. Numbing is standard for both, and the extra heat is what gives RF microneedling its stronger tightening effect. If comfort is a priority, start with standard microneedling. If you’re targeting laxity or deeper acne scars, RF microneedling is usually worth the extra intensity.
What to expect afterward
| When | What’s normal |
|---|---|
| The same day | Redness and a warm, tight, sunburned feeling. |
| Days 1–3 | Redness fades to pink. Skin can feel dry or slightly rough. |
| Days 3–7 | Light flaking as the skin renews. Most people are back to makeup within a day or two, once the skin has closed. |
| Weeks 4–6 | Collagen keeps building. Most plans repeat treatment about every four to six weeks. |
The FDA lists bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling, itching, dryness and skin peeling as possible effects. It also advises against microneedling for people on blood thinners, with an active skin infection, or with a history of keloid scarring, among others.
How to make microneedling more comfortable
- Arrive without makeup so the numbing cream can be applied straight away and left on long enough.
- Tell your provider which areas are most sensitive. Depth can be adjusted area by area.
- Skip caffeine right before your appointment if it makes you jumpy, and come rested.
- Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for a few days before treatment, as your clinic directs.
- Plan for gentle skincare and strict sun protection for the first week.
Professional vs. at-home microneedling
At-home dermarollers use much shorter needles. They feel milder but can’t reach the depth that drives meaningful collagen change, and rollers can tear the skin rather than make clean vertical channels. Professional devices use sterile, single-use needle cartridges, adjustable depth for each area of the face, and a clinical setting with numbing and proper aftercare. The FDA notes that it has authorised only a limited number of microneedling devices for specific uses, which is another reason to have it done by trained staff using a cleared device.

Frequently asked questions
Does microneedling hurt without numbing cream?
It’s noticeably sharper without it, especially on the forehead and upper lip. Numbing cream is standard for facial microneedling at BHRC.
Is microneedling painful for acne scars?
Scar treatment often uses deeper settings, which you’ll feel more, but numbing keeps it manageable. RF microneedling is often recommended for deeper scars.
How long does microneedling take?
About an hour including numbing time. The needling itself usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for the face.
How long after microneedling can I wear makeup?
Most providers suggest waiting at least 24 hours, until the skin has closed. Follow your clinic’s aftercare.
How often should you microneedle?
A typical plan is a series of three or more sessions about four to six weeks apart, then maintenance.
Does microneedling tighten skin?
It stimulates collagen, which improves firmness and texture over time. For more noticeable tightening, RF microneedling adds heat to boost the effect.
