How Long Does Lip Filler Last? Timeline, Cost per Syringe and Aftercare
Dermal fillers · Lips
Most hyaluronic acid lip fillers last 6 to 12 months. Here is what affects that, how the first two weeks go, and what a syringe costs at each BHRC clinic.
How long lip filler lasts
Most lip fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar molecule your skin already contains. The FDA explains that the HA in fillers is chemically cross-linked so it lasts longer in the body, and that because it is absorbed over time, treatments need repeating to keep the result.
The manufacturer of Juvéderm states that, with optimal treatment, results from Juvéderm Volbella XC and Juvéderm Ultra XC can last up to 1 year. Lips are one of the most mobile areas of the face, so many people find their lips look best for about 6 to 9 months and book a touch-up between 9 and 12 months.
What makes lip filler last longer or shorter
- The product. Softer lip-specific gels are designed for natural movement. Firmer gels give more shape and can hold longer but feel less natural in the lips.
- How much you have. A half syringe gives a subtle hydration and definition result that fades sooner than a full syringe. Building up over two visits often holds better than one large treatment.
- Movement and metabolism. Talking, eating and an active metabolism all break HA down a little faster.
- Repeat treatments. Many patients find later treatments need less product to keep the same look.
Choosing a lip filler: thin, soft or full?
Lip fillers differ in how firm the gel is. Softer, smoother gels are designed for natural movement and fine definition, and are popular for subtle hydration or a first treatment. Slightly firmer gels hold more shape and volume. A good injector chooses the product for the result you want, for example defining the border, adding volume to the body of the lip, or correcting unevenness. They don’t use one product for every patient. Bring photos of lips you like, and of lips you don’t, to your consultation. That is often more useful than describing a size.
Signs it’s time for a touch-up
As filler is absorbed, the border usually softens first and the lips look less defined. Then the fullness gradually decreases. Many patients book a touch-up when the definition starts to fade, which usually needs less product than starting from scratch.
Does lip filler go away completely?
HA filler is temporary and is gradually absorbed. If you don’t like the result, HA filler can also be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which most patients find reassuring. Ask your injector whether the product they plan to use can be dissolved before you agree to it.
The first two weeks: swelling and settling
| When | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | The most swelling, especially on waking. Lips can look larger and slightly uneven. This is normal. |
| Days 4–7 | Most swelling is gone. Any bruising fades. |
| Weeks 2–4 | The filler has settled and integrated. This is your real result, and the right time for any touch-up. |
The FDA lists bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching as common, short-lived side effects of fillers. Most clinics suggest skipping straws, kissing, hard workouts and alcohol for the first 24 to 48 hours. Your injector will give you exact aftercare.

Is lip filler safe?
FDA-approved HA fillers have a long safety record when injected by a trained medical professional. The most serious risk with any filler is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which is rare but needs immediate treatment. That is why the injector’s training matters more than the price. The FDA also warns that needle-free “hyaluron pens” are not approved for injecting filler.

Frequently asked questions
How long does lip filler last the first time?
Usually 6 to 12 months. First-time results can fade a little sooner. Juvéderm states Volbella XC and Ultra XC lip results can last up to a year with optimal treatment.
How long does it take for lip filler to settle?
About two weeks. Swelling peaks in the first two or three days, and the final shape shows at two to four weeks.
How long after lip filler can I kiss or use a straw?
Most injectors recommend waiting at least 24 hours, because pressure and suction on fresh filler can shift it and add to swelling.
Does lip filler hurt?
Most lip fillers contain lidocaine, a numbing agent, and many clinics apply a numbing cream first. Most people describe pressure and brief stings rather than pain.
Is lip filler permanent?
No. HA lip filler is absorbed gradually and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed.
Can you get lip filler while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Fillers have not been studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so we wait until after.
