The skincare routine for melasma and dark spots

The short answerA routine for melasma and dark spots needs two things: a serum that targets discoloration, used morning and night, and a tinted mineral sunscreen worn every day. SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense, with tranexamic acid, kojic acid and niacinamide, is our first choice for melasma.

Why melasma comes back

Melasma is driven by sun, visible light, heat and hormones, so it tends to return when protection lapses. That is why sunscreen is the step that decides whether the rest of the routine works. A tinted mineral formula is the easiest to wear every day.

Dark spots versus melasma

Sun spots are usually distinct, darker marks. Melasma tends to appear as larger, symmetrical patches across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. Both respond to a discoloration serum and daily SPF, but melasma usually needs longer and more care with heat and irritation.

When to see a provider

If your pigmentation is new, changing or not responding after three months of consistent use, book a consultation. Treatments such as Cosmelan and medical peels can be combined with this routine. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask before starting any pigment product.
